He said: Chilled before opening. Light wheat straw color with a tad of green. Light tropical fruit aromas. Full mouth-feel that’s slightly creamy, dry, with a dusty pear taste that carries through a long finish with hints of mineral. The Junius Lindsay Vineyard comes through with a winner. This is clearly OUTSTANDING North Carolina white wine. We bought an elaborate picnic lunch (cilantro marinated shrimp, crab quiche and strawberries with chocolate) to the Junius Lindsay Vineyard and drank their Second Leaf Viognier-Roussanne. When we were checking out Michael Zimmerman recommended this Roussanne, he gave us a taste and we bought a bottle. And, it’s simply OUTSTANDING North Carolina wine and a good value.
She said: Clear, with slow legs. Mild aroma disappears quickly. Mellow fruit flavors, crisp and with medium body and long flavorful finish. Better alone than with the dinner because the garlic in the salad dressing overwhelmed the delicate flavors in the wine.
But the wine is an enigma; the grapes were grown by Junius Lindsay Vineyard, but made into wine and bottled by Childress Winery (both in Lexington, North Carolina) yet the wine bearing the name of Junius Lindsay is far superior to all the wines we have had from Childress. Why doesn’t Childress make better wine for himself? Junius Lindsay wine is delicious and one of the best wines from North Carolina and I am not usually impressed with North Carolina wine. I would buy this again and look forward to another bottle.
We went to the vineyard and drank wine with our picnic lunch that we brought. There was a nice facility, great ambiance in the middle of the vineyard and live music. If you are in the area, check it out…it gets our “without reservation” recommendation!
