Note: Every now and again, when we find a good sale, we purchase wine we know nothing about from the grocery store. This is one of those sale-price “pig in a poke” grocery store wines. Generally we try to get non-domestic brands simply because we have been disappointed so frequently with sweet, poor quality wines…especially the reds. However, occasionally we get lucky and discover a real winner…a wine with excellent quality that’s sold at a very low price…e.g. La Vieille Ferme Recolte Blanc 2019.
Chilled before drinking. Clear very pale wheat straw color with a slight effervesce on the side of the glass with each pour. Delicate citrus, apple and green melon aromas. A smooth, oily mouthfeel, light to medium body and a 200-grit texture. Lemon, apple, tart quince and quinine water flavors. Plenty of crisp acidity, but less than expected and a finish that carries the tastes on into a VERY bitter aftertaste. This was a toned down Pinot Grigio that was satisfying yet missing a knock your socks off crisp freshness. Pleasant with the salmon and it held its own with the strong orange/curry sauce flavor, but wasn’t the palate cleaner we expected from an Italian Pinot Grigio. By the last pour we both said it was quite easy drinking and there were not any undesirable tastes, but we simply called it a stodgy Pinot Grigio.
