Opened and decanted 90 minutes before drinking. Just barley clear, dark purple-ruby color with a light purple rim. Noteworthy aromas that included traditional blackberry, but mostly wineberry (Rubus phoenicolasius), wisps of Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) blossoms, lots of new leather and a background of fresh cut cedar. Smooth entry, savory mouth feel, full body and a 200-grit texture. Dusty wineberry, rich blackberry jam, five spice Chinese powder and blueberry flavors so rich you could chew on them. Bright acidity, fine-grained leathery tannins and a long potent finish that explodes with chewy tannins and berry preserves. WOW, a fantastic Zinfandel. Although it was a full-body wine with a high alcohol content, it was light on its feet and had fresh tastes from start to finish. The distinct wineberry aroma and taste brought instant images of the dense underbrush along fence rows where they grow on our Northern New Jersey farm…picking the berries is difficult, but the unique concentrated flavor of the berries is like finding the pot an the end of the rainbow!!! A vivacious wine that will delight any Zinfandel lover. We thought it was OUTSTANDING Zinfandel!!!
Note: even with the 90 minute decant the third pour was much better than the first.
