Opened two hours before drinking. Just barely clear, dark garnet/purple color with a light purple rim. Plum, blackberry and chocolate aromas with whiffs of lavender and sweet tobacco. Smooth, quite rustic, but with a savory mouthfeel, medium to full body and a 150-grit texture.`Slightly muted plum and blackberry flavors, but with hints of cherry and fresh cut Sassafras albidum. Lots of bright acidity, gobs of firm, almost stemmy tannins and a long fruity, peppery and tannic finish. The wine was meaty and had real substance, but with the subdued fresh tastes it really wanted to be decanted. It paired perfectly with the beef flavors and we both commented that the beef bourguignon and this Syrah together made a memorable dinner. We called it DELICIOUS Cote Rotie Syrah.
