Opened and decanted one hour before drinking. Clear, ruby color with the same color rim. Cherry, sweet spices and leather aromas with intermittent hints of heavy floral. Fairly smooth entry, somewhat rustic, dusty and energetic mouthfeel, medium body and an 80-grit texture. Intense cherry coke, tar, cinnamon, licorice and peppery spice flavors. Bright acidity, firm tannins and a long and muscular tannic and tar finish. WOW, the first pour was unrestrained, brashly self-confident and flamboyant, but by the second and third pours it became complex and intoxicating classic Nebbiolo…its difficult to imagine how much it evolved. We’ve had this wine side-by-side with other Nebbiolo wines (see: Comparison Tasting: Vallana Campi Raudii 1955 and 2014 and Comparison Tasting: Vallana Campi Raudii 2012, Vallana Spanna 2012 and Vallana Gattinara 2006); however it’s the first time we’ve had it by itself. Unfortunitely in these earlier comparison tastings its always been the “entry level” or low end of the wines being tasted. When we had this alone we gave it a more through review of its characteristics, not how it compared to others. We called it an absolutely FANTASTIC value Nebbiolo, its quality was way, way better than the price would suggest!!!
