Opened one hour before drinking. Clear, muddy ruby color with a lighter rim. Heavy aromas including wet wood, ripe plum, damp basement, blooming lavender, bay leaves and turmeric. Intense, dry, soft mouthfeel, solid medium body and a 400-grit texture. Filled with tart plum and current flavors, fresh acidity and round-edged tannins that had no perceptible grip. An unusual finish filled with fruit, spice and a zippy sharpness that went on and on. There were lots of flavors, but a much lighter mouthfeel than expected from the dark color and medium body. The jolt in the finish was quite startling and greatly influenced how we felt about the wine. We called it “GOOD” Portuguese red.
