Note: We first had this Luis Pato wine at an Undercurrent Restaurant Wine Dinner where we came home with several of the wines we had at the dinner. When we first tasted it at the wine dinner we both commented on how good it was for the price. Now having it at home with a simple Mediterranean dinner we again commented how delicious it was and what a great buy it turned out to be!!! Following is our review of this Joao Pato Nerd Duck.
Opened 90-minutes before drinking. Clear, pale ruby red color with a purple cast and a light purple rim. Lethargic damp wood, orange blossoms and unusual earthy mineral aromas. Very smooth entry, dry, spicy mouthfeel, medium-full body (even though it looked light bodied) and a 80-grit texture. Tart raspberry, cranberry and peppery flavors. Medium acidity, soft tannins and a long peppery and tart fruity finish. Somewhat of a surprise…it looked pale and weak in the glass, but it was robust, flavorful and a delicious red wine!!! The fresh and vibrant red fruit really stole the show here and what started as a lark turned out to be a very delicious red wine. It paired VERY WELL with the chicken kabobs and we called it an interesting and unusual Portuguese blend.
