Tasting:

Note: Every now and again, when we find a good sale, we purchase wine we know nothing about from the grocery store. This is one of those sale-price “pig in a poke” grocery store wines. Generally we try to get non-domestic brands simply because we have been disappointed so frequently with sweet, poor quality wines…especially the reds. However, occasionally we get lucky and discover a real winner…a wine with excellent quality that’s sold at a very low price…e.g. La Vieille Ferme Recolte Blanc 2019.

Chilled before drinking. Clear, very, very pale salmon color. Wonderful strawberry and citrus aromas. Zesty and maybe a little off-dry mouthfeel, light body and a 150-grit texture. Strawberry dominated flavor with secondarily peach, current and bitter California grapefruit; but, there was a distracting underlying stainless steel taste that grew more prevalent with each pour and the wine warmed. Nice fresh acidity and a long bitter strawberry finish. Not your ordinary French Rosé…this was a mix of tastes and an unusual long and flavorful finish that ended flat out bitter. We had this paired with a simple grilled chicken supper on the patio. It was a warm evening and the wine was refreshing, but it was quite different from the La Vieille Ferme Recolte Rose 2015 we reviewed four years ago. The flavors were more diverse and it continues to be a FANTASTIC Rosé buy, but we still think the Perrin Cotes du Rhone Reserve Rose is an EVEN BETTER BUY!!! With all that said, in the end you can’t go wrong with this $5 Rosé…it has to be the least expensive quality Rosé you will find on the grocery store shelves.
