Preamble: When in California we have found that the grocery stores sell much higher quality wines than similar stores in the East. As a result we usually browse the wine section for inexpensive hidden gems. This was a Chianti we had never had, was inexpensive and potentially looked interesting.
Opened one hour before drinking. Clear, purple-ruby color. Very, very slight grape aroma. Smooth, sweet mouthfeel, 200-grit texture and a medium body. Sweet, fruity flavors, soft acidity, soft tannins and a long ripe cherry finish. Although it was not like any Chianti we’ve ever had, it was drinkable and very inexpensive. We called it Chianti for California wine drinkers because it was more like the typical off dry inexpensive California red blend than a Chianti from Italy.
