We served this 2011 Faury Saint-Joseph Blanc a couple of years ago (see our May 1, 2016 post: Rhone Blend Wine Tasting Dinner: A great dinner-party format) with three other Rhone whites as an appetizer course with an assortment of Murrays cheeses. It was a big hit at that party so we decided to have our last bottle with roast pork and our review follows…
Chilled before drinking. Dark golden-brown color. Powerful and influential baked apple and apricot aromas. Smooth, tangy, on the heavy side of a medium body and a 200-grit texture. Tart taste with yiesty, unripe peaches, cooked apples and an unusual “Earl Gray” tea flavor. There were also light hints of tropical fruit in the background from the beginning to the finish of each sip. Soft acidity and a medium-length dusty mineral finish. When we had this with cheese it had a fresh, lively taste and was definitely different from the wine we had with the pork. We liked it, but without question, would say IT WAS MUCH BETTER YOUNG. When we had it in 2016 we drank it side-by-side with some very excellent Rhone whites…and it stood out as an exceptionally good bottle of wine; our second bottle was simply not special at this price point and we called it just a good Rhone white.
